A.J. Haefele, was born in Aurora, Colorado, raised in Katy, Texas and is the Avalanche Editor and Editor-In-Chief of BSN Denver. Education: A.J. studied at Stephen F. Austin State University before moving back to Colorado in 2009. Career:  Before joining BSN Denver, A.J. had been writing for and briefly managed the popular Avalanche blog, Mile High Hockey. A.J. began contributing in 2010 with detailed practice reports, training camp coverage, and in-depth looks at Colorado’s divisional foes. He would expand his horizons with free agency analysis, draft coverage, and more day-to-day looks at the team before taking over the blog as Co-Managing Editor. It was a short-lived tenure atop before BSN Denver came calling. Most memorable sports moment: Ray Bourque lifting the Stanley Cup in 2001. John Elway winning his first Super Bowl is a very close second but Bourque winning the Cup and finishing “Mission 16W” is one of the greatest stories in all of sports. The finest sports book I’ve ever read: Big fan of “Moneyball”. The implications on the sport and the inside look at how an organization changed its attitude to exploit a market inefficiency was fascinating. One sports movie that I can’t live without: There aren’t really any I dislike. Major League and Cool Runnings were my favorites growing up but Miracle and Goon have been my favorites as an adult. Also can’t live without the Rocky and now Creed movies. Most memorable experience as a reporter: Covering the 2017 NHL Draft was a dream come true for me. I’d always wanted to attend a draft and I got to do it while covering the team selecting fourth overall. Interviewing Cale Makar after he was selected is something I’ll never forget. The sport that started it all: Baseball! My dad was an enormous baseball fan and when the Rockies came into existence, it was an instant bond for the two of us and created sports fanaticism that has defined most of my life.

Great podcast AJ. All of them. It is also cool to have Nathan on the PC too. His perspective is great. You guys are covering all the possible Avs moves and potential draft and FA players well. It seems like it all boils down to how well Sakic plays his hand this summer. Hopefully our response will be a total right on and wow, time to win a cup, not the WHAT???? I liked your take on playing vulture with teams in cap trouble. If Sakic does that, hopefully he will be vicious and pickup some awesome goods for the Avs without wasting assets. Can’t wait to see how this all plays out. My only suggestion for the PC would be to bring back your little music ditty at the start of each PC, It just seems to fire you up even more to listen to the PC. A little happy moment. Details….

I thought I heard the NHL and Bettman were not happy with us doing the Orpik cap dump and put something in place to block doing this?

(Don’t roll your eyes…) What if also taking Marleau is what finally makes Barrie for Nylander happen? Not only would the Leafs recoup the Marleau cap space but for a season they’d get almost 1.5 million on the Barrie/Nylander swap. We’d have to buyout Marleau in that case because there’d be no room for both those guys. I’d eat 6 million bucks for 5 years of Nylander. I do agree with you guys on taking Kadri or Kapanen and Marleau for a 2nd. Sign me up.

BTW – you can’t use someone else’s picks for an offer sheet so getting a third from Vegas wouldn’t help – not that an offer sheet is going to happen anyway. The Avs would have to get their 3rd back from Florida to use it for an offer sheet.

Another great podcast, you guys are really helping to get through this damned interesting (and critical) summer.

Yeah the point of plucking picks from elsewhere wouldn’t be to use it in an offer sheet, just to get the pick.

If Marleau pushed a Barrie/Nylander deal across the finish line, that would be fine with me. Both teams would get big boosts in areas of need.

Oh yeah, I got your guys larger point but earlier in the discussion Rudo offhandedly said something like, yeah they could take the third they get from Vegas and then they’d would have one for have an offer sheet. He probably just had a brain fart and knows that doesn’t work. Not a big deal,
