Head Colorado Buffaloes coach Karl Dorrell stepped behind the wheel for the Buffs in February under strange circumstances and, so far, his situation has only become more strange. “We’re still trying to find a way to be productive,” Dorrell said in a conference call with the media Thursday. “We’re working on recruiting, we’re working on our current players and making…...
At least two Colorado Buffaloes basketball players are leaving the program over the offseason. Daylen Kountz, who just finished his sophomore season, and Jakub Dombek, who just finished his freshman season, both entered the transfer portal last week. Now head coach Tad Boyle has two open roster spots to fill. As it stands now, nine of the 15 players slated…...
The Colorado Buffaloes are losing their biggest star in years, as wide receiver Laviska Shenault leaves Boulder early to enter the NFL Draft.
Now, the spotlight is wide open for the taking and a handful of Buffs are capable of taking it over.
Arizona State’s true freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels helped the team to its third-consecutive bowl game and best AP Top 25 ranking in five years.
He also provided something of a roadmap for Colorado to use when building an offense around true freshman Brendon Lewis.
BOULDER — Colorado Buffaloes athletic director Rick George spoke with reporters about the Buffs’ response to the COVID-19 outbreak over a conference call Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what we learned: He hasn’t reviewed the basketball season The Buffs’ 2019-20 basketball campaign ended on a disappointing note but George hasn’t had a chance to break down what went wrong with head coach…...
The Colorado Buffaloes’ spring football season ahould be underway. If not for the coronavirus outbreak, the Buffs would have held their first practice of 2020 early Monday morning. Instead, CU won’t practice until the last week of March, at the earliest, and there’s a chance the hiatus will extend longer. It’s unlikely that any of the practices will be made…...
The 2019-20 college basketabll season will be remembered for its abrupt ending. The 2019-20 Colorado Buffaloes basketball season will be remembered for the mistakes. What was supposed to be the best season in CU history tanked in the final weeks. The Buffs stood on the brink of history for four-straight games, needing just one win to set a new all-time…...
It would almost be easy to brush off Colorado's performance Wednesday night.
The Buffs entered their opening game in the Pac-12 Tournament under the strangest of circumstances. In the two-and-a-half hours before tipoff, the favorite for NBA Defensive Player of the Year tested positive for a pandemic disease, the disease forced the NBA to suspend all play, the president banned travel to Europe, and the team was told that fans would not be allowed in the gym for the rest of the tournament.
LAS VEGAS — It was a long road but we made it. The Colorado Buffaloes ended their 2019-20 regular-season campaign on a four-game losing streak but there were tons of great moments along the way. D’Shawn Schwartz’s overtime game-winner against Dayton The win over Oregon at The Keg A high-water mark of 15th in the AP Poll Even though we’ve already…...
The Colorado Buffaloes received some welcome news Monday morning as the Pac-12 Conference released its all-conference teams for the 2019-20 men’s basketball season. McKinley Wright IV and Tyler Bey led the Buffaloes to a 21-10 regular-season record and the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament and were rewarded with a number of honors. Wright was first-team All-Pac-12 and made…...
This would have been much more fun to analyze four games ago, but here we are. The regular season is over and maybe the drama of March will propel Colorado toward a Cinderella story. Although the Buffaloes are entering the Pac-12 tournament on a four-game losing skid, they are still 21-10 and are sitting pretty in all the major rankings,…...
The 2020 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament bracket is set.
The tournament will tip off at noon local time on Wednesday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The sixth-seeded Colorado Buffaloes will start their postseason run at 8:30 PT Wednesday.
Colorado had this game, no questions asked. With nine seconds left, McKinley Wright IV caught the inbounds pass and was immediately fouled, sending him to the line for a one-and-one. The Buffs, up to one at this point, needed their star to hit both of his shots and they would get a first-round bye in Las Vegas. If this were…...
It’s March. That means that for the next 20- or 30-something days, you’re going to hear one phrase more than any other: one game at a time. “If you have one bad game or one bad outing — or on the other hand, you get hot — that’s why they call it madness,” Colorado Buffaloes head coach Tad Boyle said…...
The last weekend of the 2019-20 Pac-12 basketball season is here and things are tight.
UCLA, Oregon and Arizona State all have a chance to come away with the regular-season title, but there's more going on behind those teams in the standings.
Colorado is currently sitting in fourth place, meaning that if the season ended before this final round of games, they'd take the fourth and final bye through the first round of the Pac-12 tournament. That's the Buffs' goal this week and that's what we'll focus on when talking through these scenarios.
Here's how the Pac-12 stands, as of right now:
1. UCLA (12-5)
2. Oregon (11-5)
3. Arizona State (10-6)
4. Colorado (10-7)
--- NO BYE ---
5. USC (10-7)
6. Stanford (9-7)
7. Arizona (9-7)
8. California (7-9)
9. Washington State (6-10)
10. Utah (6-11)
11. Oregon State (5-11)
12. Washington (3-13)
You'll notice that six teams could still finish with seven losses since the top of the conference is so tight. That means that even a win at Utah wouldn't guarantee the Buffs a first-round bye.
The final standings are decided by in-conference winning percentage but if there's a tie, whoever won the head-to-head series between the teams gets the better seed. If the season series was split, then whoever had the best record against the best team in the conference gets the higher seed. If that's a tie, then it goes to the record against the second-best team, then the third, etc.
UCLA has locked up one of the four byes, but Colorado could surpass any other team in the standings.
For example, Colorado would lose a head-to-head tiebreaker with Oregon because Oregon beat UCLA (the potential No. 1 team in the conference), but if it was a three-way tie with Colorado, Oregon and Arizona State, Colorado would get the highest seed because of the teams' record against each other. Oregon split its series' with Colorado and Arizona State, but the Buffs beat Arizona State in their only conference game.
Here's what the Buffs need to happen this weekend, in order of importance:
BOULDER — Colorado Buffaloes head basketball coach Tad Boyle didn't mince words in his first media availability since returning from his team's 0-2 road trip to the Bay Area.
"Our attitude is not what it needs to be, our effort is not what it needs to be, certainly our execution is not what it needs to be, our toughness, our discipline, all of the things that go into winning games this time of year," Boyle said.
He called out his team's flaws and he named names.
Colorado’s defensive staff may be set. The Colorado Buffaloes have added two coaches to their football staff, the Boulder Daily Camera’s Brian Howell reported Monday morning. Chris Wilson, 51, will coach the Buffs’ defensive line. Demetrice Martin, 47, will coach Colorado’s defensive backs in some form. Wilson is entering his 28th year of coaching. He’s largely worked in the FBS…...
Saturday afternoon's game was ugly.
The No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes entered Maples Pavillion to take on the Stanford Cardinal with a chip on their shoulder.
At least, we thought they did.
As it turned out, Colorado's two-game losing streak and two weeks-plus of streaky play didn't light a fire under the Buffaloes. Instead, they were as complacent as ever.
The passes were soft and loose. There was no interest in fighting with Stanford's bigs on the glass. The trips up and down the court looked more like happy walks in the California sun than actual attempts to stop a fast break.
Nobody was interested in playing defense. The perimeter defenders may as well have been runway marshalls waving those orange, tube-y cone things toward the open driving lanes. The rim protectors probably should have gotten down on a knee in case a Stanford guard wanted a boost up to the rim since his legs were probably worn out from driving unencumbered to the rim over, and over, and over again.
Colorado was not mean. Colorado was not scary.
D’Shawn Schwartz caught a pass in the right corner and began a dribble-drive towards the hoop. The defender crashed to the ground, drawing a charge. As Schwartz hit the deck, Colorado’s remaining lineup jogged to the other end, hanging their heads. No one went to pick up their fallen teammate; no one even tried to fight the call or rally…...
It may not feel like it, but the Colorado Buffaloes just benefitted from new head coach Karl Dorrell's expansive coaching tree for the first time.
Taylor Embree will be Colorado's next tight ends coach, DNVR's Ryan Koenigsberg reported Saturday morning. Taylor is the son of Jon Embree, who played for the Buffs in the '80s and was the head coach of the Buffs from 2011-12.
The younger Embree is largely unknown. He was a good receiver at UCLA, where he ranked top-three on the team in receptions in three seasons, but he wasn't good enough to stick in the NFL past his first training camp. At just 31 years old, the highest title Embree has held is offensive quality control coach.
But if Karl Dorrell says Embree deserves a spot on his Power 5 staff then there's a decent chance he's a star in the making.
